Proposal for my music magazine

My Proposal

For my music magazine I intend to produce a pop magazine, including weird styles such as lady gaga's, and rough styles like Kesha and Pixie Lott. The target audience will be teenagers, mostly girls as the magazine will feature more female artists. The style of my magazine will be up to date with fashion and style of pop singers and groups but have a rougher, edgyer style as well, to make it more unique and individual.

The front cover will contain a medium close up of my artist and will include pinks and purples, toned down with black and white.

College Magazine Cover and Contents

Front Cover

For the front cover of my college magazine I used the outdoor picture with direct mode of address. I did this to pull the reader in. I have lightened the picture so the models features stand out, making her more appealing to the reader. I have used bright colours for the writing as it contrasts with the dark, rough looking wall in the background. I think my magazine would attract college students as it had a fun look about it.

What I like about my cover is that it stands out and it would appeal to its target audience. The strengths of my magazine are the colours as they catch readers attention and represents a fun, happy college.

If i could change anything about my cover i would have more writing and more different features of a magazine to make it look more professional. I will need to think about this when it comes to designing my music magazine.

Contents

For my contents page I used a picture of part of the grounds of prior and brightened it to make it look very appealing. I used a picture which uses the rule of thirds as the 5mph sign is the main feature but it is not in the center. This gives a good effect to the contents page as the colours contrast and stand out.

Negative points of my front cover are that there are no page references which goes against the point of a contents page. If i were to improve the contents page I would have more text and make them able to read as the colours of the text againsnt the background make the writing hard to read.

Photos for Magazine Cover

These photos are medium close ups for a college magazine. I experimented with different poses to get an effect that would look good on a front cover.

House style and design

House style is a certain look or style that a magazine has. The magazine must keep this style throughout.

A niche market is a new market. For my music magazine I am going to create a new niche market, to represent a new genre of music. I am going to call my niche market 'Grunge Pop'. This represents the style I want for my magazine.

Ideology

Ideology is usually a political subject because it is the foundation of our opinions. Everyone is affected by ideology.
An ideology is a world view, a system of how we see things, attitudes and beliefs that have effects on groups or individuals, which could be important.

Political ideology will take values and twist them so it fits into its own view of the world.

Values often go at the heart of the media, most newspaper stories are written with values in mind.

Left-wing and Right-wing
Britain is under a left wing rule but is considered a capitalist country, as it is still rich.
The Daily Telegraph is a right-wing newspaper and the Daily Mirror is a left-wing newspaper.

Hegemony: the way that those in power hold onto it.
Hegemony means 'to lead' newspapers us to lead the people who read it.

Identity: The way in which people are seen.
Social groups have different identitys.

Audiences

Audience theorys

Hypodermic Theory- the media injects the audience.
The media control the message and infulence of the audience.
This theory says that the audience is weak, vunerable, drugged and dumb.
The audience must be protected from the power of the media.

This theory views the media as a bad influence on people and makes out that the audience is dumb and will listen to anything the media tells them and it is dangerous for them.

Uses and Gratification Theory- The meaning isnt fixed or determined.
This theory says that the meaning can be encoded or decoded, there will be a difference between what the media intend it to mean and what you decide it is.
YOU use the media for different reasons:
  • Education
  • Escapism or stress release
  • Information
  • A mean of self identification
  • Group or society belonging
  • Sexual stimulation

Subjuectives- Things like age, gender, class, religion, income, location, lifestyle etc. can determine the social position of a person
I produced a questionnaire which asked people questions about their parents job, interests, how often they go out and more questions that could be used to determine their social class.

Representation and Mediation

Representation and Mediation

Implicit Personality Theory
This theory explains the process we go through when stereotyping.
As humans we use our unique knowledge about people when we judge them .
Past experience is more important than the persons actual personality features when we judge them. Traits exist more in the eye of the beholder than in reality.
We categorise people into types (IE. workaholic, feminist) to simplify perception of people. In our minds we put together traits of people and make a prototype, which is a mix of traits that we may consider a typical of that category.

Mediation

Mediation is the process of representation.
Selection is what has ended up on the final product, much more will have been left out.
Organisation
The various parts will have been organised in a way that real life cannot. In visual media this involves mise-en-scene and the organisation of narrative.
Focusing
All media ends up with the audience being encouraged towards something imparticular.

Stereotyping

Media Studies
Stereotyping

Representation is the way that people are shown.
Stereotyping is a standardised attitude that is related to a certain group and members of the group.
The Implicit personality theory explains the process we go through when stereotyping.
We use our unique knowledge and past experience to to judge people.
Gender stereotyping is about how men and women should typically look. Female stereotyping fits into a few categories; supermom, sex kitten, career girl. All over the media woman are shown conventionally thin, white and good looking. This pressurises readers into trying to look like this which can make them insecure about their bodies and looks.
Male stereotyping is usually masculinity, for example big muscles and coolness. The media constantly use good looking men, which can make males try to fit in with this stereotype and make them unhappy with their bodies and looks.
I did a case study on stereotyping in which i collected images of a certain type of music artist.
